Day-to-Day fashion issues, may not be about fashion at all

If anyone has had the experience of watching a fashion show from major fashion houses, you likely have seen high fashion clothing articles that are not fit for every day life – at least not for the everyday woman. For example, I love much of the risk taking seen in the house of Alexander McQueen – but a woman would be hard pressed to incorporate many of those pieces into their wardrobes. I mean uber high shoes, face masks, and bird nest-like hair dos with seemingly S&M inspired outfits just wouldn’t work on the way to Target or Ross.
Most of us women have much simpler fashion issues on the day-to-day. A couple of weeks ago, while at my sister’s house before work, her question to me was – can I wear wrinkled jeans to the store? We ultimately decided yes – but just for a quick morning run. Other fashionistas might argue that women need to be at their best all of the time. But that is not the true day-to-day.
I know there are mornings when I pull something out of the closet to notice that it has a stain or maybe a “unique” smell. I wonder how it made its way back into the wardrobe rotation with those issues. So the questions about what you can get away with for the day are real.
I posted a quote a few weeks ago – If you have to ask “Can I get away with [wearing] this?” you probably shouldn’t. I got reactions to that quote almost immediately. For some of us, our fashion issues are about getting by – not necessarily avoiding the fashion police, but instead avoiding our kids, or nieces and nephews – who as we know by now can be much crueler than any celebrity gossip show.
I know for me, the other day as I got ready for work, I kept thinking – really I am much cuter than this, I just don’t have time. I quickly penciled in my eyebrows where I have bald spots from years of plucking, threw on my fake Afro puff and headed out the door.
I looked good enough to get by, but that can’t be my mantra. I think accepting “getting by” is when it all goes down hill.

And — on a side note, I totally realize that I haven’t written about fashion – like what to wear- in quite some time. I am just still grappling with issues that are far away from whether to wear a pencil skirt or an A-lined one. I mean I am grappling with having bald spots in my eye brows while also finding gray hairs in my eye brows …hum at that point, who cares about a skirt. I will snap out of it. Hang in there with me guys.

Patriotism looks good on you

Lately in our country there has been a question about who is and who isn’t American. There have been attempts to ban, deride, belittle and dismiss certain groups in this–our country–which purports to be one nation under God. This is not new, but the fact that it is spearheaded by the leader of our country is quite unnerving.

Independence Day, however disrupts the one-sided notion of patriotism.

I had the pleasure of covering the Fourth of July Parade and Celebration in Vallejo, CA and was thrilled by the way in which Americans, in this small city, came out to represent. Patriotism is diverse and is expressed in many ways, and it was not only fashionable but it was a reminder of the strength that comes from difference.

Just as confidence is one of the best accessories one can wear – patriotism, in all its form was the accessory of the day. Gotta love the stars and stripes.
