If anyone has had the experience of watching a fashion show from major fashion houses, you likely have seen high fashion clothing articles that are not fit for every day life – at least not for the everyday woman. For example, I love much of the risk taking seen in the house of Alexander McQueen – but a woman would be hard pressed to incorporate many of those pieces into their wardrobes. I mean uber high shoes, face masks, and bird nest-like hair dos with seemingly S&M inspired outfits just wouldn’t work on the way to Target or Ross.
Most of us women have much simpler fashion issues on the day-to-day. A couple of weeks ago, while at my sister’s house before work, her question to me was – can I wear wrinkled jeans to the store? We ultimately decided yes – but just for a quick morning run. Other fashionistas might argue that women need to be at their best all of the time. But that is not the true day-to-day.
I know there are mornings when I pull something out of the closet to notice that it has a stain or maybe a “unique” smell. I wonder how it made its way back into the wardrobe rotation with those issues. So the questions about what you can get away with for the day are real.
I posted a quote a few weeks ago – If you have to ask “Can I get away with [wearing] this?” you probably shouldn’t. I got reactions to that quote almost immediately. For some of us, our fashion issues are about getting by – not necessarily avoiding the fashion police, but instead avoiding our kids, or nieces and nephews – who as we know by now can be much crueler than any celebrity gossip show.
I know for me, the other day as I got ready for work, I kept thinking – really I am much cuter than this, I just don’t have time. I quickly penciled in my eyebrows where I have bald spots from years of plucking, threw on my fake Afro puff and headed out the door.
I looked good enough to get by, but that can’t be my mantra. I think accepting “getting by” is when it all goes down hill.
And — on a side note, I totally realize that I haven’t written about fashion – like what to wear- in quite some time. I am just still grappling with issues that are far away from whether to wear a pencil skirt or an A-lined one. I mean I am grappling with having bald spots in my eye brows while also finding gray hairs in my eye brows …hum at that point, who cares about a skirt. I will snap out of it. Hang in there with me guys.
